Hemlock residents will be asked, on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, to renew the previously approved non-homestead base millage. This proposal will not impact the taxes on owner-occupied homes in our district. Only second or rental homes, commercial properties and industrial properties are affected. Renewal of the non-homestead millage is essential to maintaining the current programs offered by the district. If this funding is lost, the district cannot replace it with any other funding source. While primary households are not affected by this millage, state law requires a district wide election to approve the millage. 📌 Facts at a glance: • HPSD voters last approved the non-homestead operating millage in 2022. • The millage is for a period of 10 years • This is a tax assessed against businesses and second homes, NOT homeowners • All residents in the Hemlock Public School District vote on the renewal • This money is used for district operations • This money cannot be replaced by other funding sources #HemlockStrong #BetterTogether

February is Heart Health Month, so we wanted to take a moment to celebrate some Heart Heroes in our midst. Meet Quincy, a kindergartener in Mrs. Klopf's class. He was born with a hole in his heart and had surgery at the age of 3. Here's his story, as told by his mom: "During a routine ultrasound while I was pregnant with Quincy, doctors discovered something was wrong with his heart. He was diagnosed with an Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD). This defect is a large hole in the center of the heart. It affects both the upper and lower chambers of the heart as well as the valves connecting the different chambers. When Quincy was born, doctors weren’t sure how this defect would affect him. He spent several days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while doctors determined if he needed immediate surgery or if it could wait. Quincy had to visit a cardiologist at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor many times for echocardiograms and ultrasounds. Doctors determined that because Quincy was doing well, his repair surgery could wait until he was 3. In October, 2021 Quincy went to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital to undergo open heart surgery to repair the AVSD as well as an improperly formed Mitral valve. The surgery lasted many hours and required Quincy to be put on a heart and lung bypass machine to keep him alive while the doctors patched up his heart. After the surgery was over, Quincy was on oxygen, had chest tubes to drain fluid from his chest, and had IV’s for medication and fluids. His sternum and ribs had to heal, as well as the large surgical incision on his chest. Quincy recovered very quickly and by day 5 in the hospital he was up and moving around like nothing had happened! We were discharged 5 days after his surgery and he should not need any follow up surgeries in the future! Quincy still needs to be seen by his cardiologist every two years, but his surgery was a complete success and he is not expected to have any further problems." What a champion! We are so grateful for your healthy heart, Quincy, and that you are a part of our Huskie Pack! #HemlockHeartHeroes #HeartHealth #HemlockHuskies

There's nothing like celebrating healthy hearts on Valentine's Day, right? ❤️ Mary Kraft from the American Heart Association recently visited 3 of our schools to promote heart awareness. With assemblies at both elementary schools, students learned how they can support heart health through the Kids Heart Challenge, raising funds and awareness for kids born with special hearts. Damar Hamlin is also working with the American Heart Association as he wants everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR (you can watch his video here: https://youtu.be/rLuitwaMbUY). If students complete "Finn's Mission" and learn about Hands-Only CPR, stroke signs, and other heart-health related practices, they will be put into a drawing for Super Bowl 2025 tickets. The kids can register online, invite family and friends to donate, and win fun heart charms as well. In the Middle School, the American Heart Challenge also promotes Finn's Mission - which includes completing the mission, learning about Hands-Only CPR, and being entered into a drawing for 2025 Super Bowl tickets. As they raise funds and awareness, they receive colored bracelets to remind them of the impact they are having on raising heart awareness. The Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge will run through the end of February. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach our to Nurse Becky for more information. #HeartHealthyHuskies #ValentinesDay #HemlockStrong

A Timeless Huskie Love 🥂 Hold onto your hats as we dive into the legendary tale of Mike and Kit Walton, a couple whose love story started right here at Hemlock High School. Picture this: Kit, a freshman, and Mike, a senior, crossing paths in the chaotic high school corridors. Sparks didn't exactly fly at first—Mike was dating her best friend and Kit thought he was a bit of a jerk. But his charm won her over and, luckily, his babyface won her parents over. Mike was a graduate of Hemlock High's Class of 1989, and Kit fondly recalls the sweet notes he'd slip her in the hallways that year, each little paper carrying the promise of shared moments with friends over the weekend. Mike joined the Marines as planned after graduation in '89, clinging to the hope that if their future together was to be, it would be. Hundreds of letters kept their love alive during those years apart (which Kit still has to this day), and after her graduation in May of 1992, Mike returned on leave and they tied the knot in August of that same year. Fast forward to 2024 and they have an impressive 31 years of marriage under their belt, two beautiful daughters, and a grand daughter on the way! Her name is Alice Michael, after her grandpa. Mike and Kit's journey is proof that high school love stories can stand the test of time and then some. Let's give a big shoutout to Mike and Kit Walton for keeping it real and reminding us that love is one wild ride worth taking! 🐾 #ForTheLoveOfHuskies #HemlockHuskies #SchoolSweethearts

It's #TeacherFeatureTuesday and today we're featuring the radiant RaeAnn Woodcock, the creative force behind our middle and high school art programs here at Hemlock Public School District for 17 years. We wanted you to get to know Mrs. Woodcock a little better, so here are some fun facts about her: • The Disney character she relates to the most is Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph (or at least this is what her students tell her), because she's always running around doing 12 things at once. • What would her students be surprised to find out about her? She used to play Women's Hockey, and she performed with her All Star Pompon Team at the Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia. • A quirky talent she has? Not only does she carve snow in the winter...she carves sand in the summer. • Her nickname as a child was "Rae Rae" and she wanted to be a zoologist. • Something she's super proud of this year was having 3 teams - and a total of 24 current and former Hemlock High School Snow carvers - at Snowfest this year. We’re so thrilled to have you in our Huskie Pack, Mrs. Woodcock! #Huskietastic #Since1863 #HPSDPackLeader #HemlockStrong #HemlockHuskies

Our little huskies have been busy spreading love and kindness throughout the community. Mrs. Klopf's class had an amazing day of community service at Stone Crest Care Facility in Freeland. From delivering balloon people to crafting with residents, and even playing a fun bowling game, it was a heartwarming day filled with love and joy. Thanks to donations collected throughout January and the creativity of Party Pals Balloonery, they adopted all 31 residents as a part of the Adopt A Grandparent Program. ❤️ #CommunityService #SpreadLove #AdoptAGrandparent #Huskietastic

Mrs. Schmidt's 3rd Grade STEAM students learned about how animals in the wild have to compete for resources, but discovered through further research that some animals work together in groups instead of working to survive on their own. They then programmed cars with magnets to represent animals collecting resources in the wild and modeled how animals working together gained more resources than those who worked alone. It was wonderful to see these young scientists discuss how and why animals display certain behaviors and then model their discoveries in a fun way. #STEAMEducation #HemlockHuskies #Since1863

🎓 In our first Alumni Spotlight, we're thrilled to feature Angela Oliver (formerly Engel), a proud graduate of Hemlock High School's class of 2000. Angela was deeply involved in the Hemlock community, participating in Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, and contributing to the Prom/Homecoming Committee and Student Council. When asked about her favorite aspect of Hemlock, Angela emphasized the blend of small-town charm with ample big-city opportunities, a unique combination that shaped her worldview. Following her graduation, Angela pursued her passion for education and sports at Grand Valley State University, earning a B.S. in Movement Science with a double emphasis in K-12 Education and Athletic Training, along with a minor in Health Education. She furthered her academic journey with a Master of Education degree from Tiffin University in 2011. Reflecting on her time at Hemlock, Angela credits the school for preparing her extensively for life beyond graduation. Through opportunities for job shadowing and volunteering, she gained invaluable insights into teaching and athletic training. Angela fondly remembers the supportive educators who left a lasting impact, including Mr. Agresta, Mr. Vondette, Mrs. Lockwood, Mrs. Bry, Mrs. Metiva, and Trainer Becky, among others. Her standout memory from Hemlock High School? Playing in the State Semi-Final softball game in Battle Creek in 2000, coached by the ineffable Larry Graf, alongside her incredible team. Today, Angela serves as an Elementary P.E./Health Teacher and Certified Athletic Trainer at Montrose Community Schools. She finds immense fulfillment in shaping young minds, teaching them lifelong skills about health, well-being, and physical fitness. Angela cherishes the relationships she's built with her students, some of whom she's had the pleasure of reconnecting with as their Athletic Trainer in recent years. For current huskie high schoolers, Angela offers sage advice: Get involved in school activities and don't hesitate to explore potential careers through job shadowing opportunities. It's all about finding your passion and nurturing it. Angela Oliver's journey from Hemlock High School to her impactful career is a testament to the foundation laid by her alma mater and the dedication she brings to her profession. We're proud to spotlight her achievements and celebrate her ongoing contributions to education and athletics. #HemlockHuskies #AlumniSpotlight #BetterTogether #Since1863
