Festival Approaches
Coming up at the end of April will be our first ever Virtual Band and Orchestra Festival.
While we are used to packing the band up, loading up the trailer, and walking into Festival ready to blow the roof off, this year will look a bit different. Through a generous donation, we are in possession of some top-tier recording equipment, so we will pick a day in the two-week recording window, don our Tuxes, and record in the new band room. Our goal is to continue the streak of First Division Ratings that Hemlock has become accustomed to, while returning to the MSBOA. Our set list is Three Scottish Vistas by William Owens (check out the write up we did on the composer earlier this week) and Down by the Salley Garden by Michael Sweeney. Keep your eyes peeled for some rehearsal video, outtakes, and eventually final recordings. If you have any questions about this new and hopefully temporary format, or want to see any other types of content from us, comment below and let us know!

Jazz Beautiful Mind Pt.1
Here in our first installment of JBM, we see the work it takes to compose and arrange music. The students came up with some cool licks based on the chord progression and the blues scale, and we figured out where they would fit best in the arrangement. What looks like a whole jumble of numbers, a twisted sudoku puzzle, a brain-leaking-out-of-your-ear mess, will turn out to be a really cool and completely original arrangement of a great standard that was done wholly by their own creativity. Stay tuned for more updates on this arrangement, from the next step of clean sheet music to the final recorded product! If you want to see more whiteboard messes and see the crazy amount of brain-power the jazz band is putting out, comment below and let us know!

Hemlock Instrument Repair Center Treats First Victim
After a successful Donors Choose campaign that secured around $900 worth of tools and instrument repair equipment, the Hemlock Instrument Repair Center got its first patient. The patient was a trusty old cornet that had lost its finger hook. With the help of some cool tools that were part of the donation, including a propane fired blow-torch, the finger ring was soldered back into place and the cornet is good as new! Be on the lookout for after pics, and if you are interested in seeing videos of the repair process, student-done repairs, or a tour of the repair center and its progress, comment below and let us know!
