Get ready to dig in! Hemlock Public School District is embarking on an ambitious Earth Day project that will transform the legendary Bill Agresta Cross Country Course. On April 22, 2025, an army of students and community volunteers will come together to revitalize this beloved course, creating a lasting legacy for athletes and the community alike.
The Agresta Course, named after the iconic Hemlock teacher and coach, has seen its share of changes over the years. Now, it's time for a major upgrade! Partnering with the Saginaw County Health Department and health resource advocate Carrie Nelson, Hemlock Public School District is ready to make this course a true gem in mid-Michigan.
A Community Effort for a Greener Future
The 3.1 mile course will be divided into six sections, each roughly half a mile long. Students in grades 4-12 will participate in three shifts throughout the day, working alongside adult volunteers to:
Remove debris and overgrowth
Install new signage
Trim trees and clear pathways
Rake and level the course
Fill in low spots with sand and dirt
Plant grass seed
"This project is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about environmental stewardship while making a tangible difference in our community," shared Board President Matt Wesener. "The Agresta Course is a valuable asset for our athletes and residents, and we're excited to see it brought to its full potential."
A Vision for the Future
The Earth Day makeover is just the first step in a multi-year plan to transform the Agresta Course into a premier destination in mid-Michigan. The district envisions a course that not only serves its cross-country teams and athletes but also connects the North and Middle School campuses via a scenic trail.
"We're not just improving a course; we're building a lasting legacy for our students and community," said Superintendent Killingbeck. "This project embodies the spirit of collaboration and community engagement that defines Hemlock Public School District."
