ESPORTS

Hemlock Public School District is excited to announce a significant step forward in its commitment to esports with the development of a dedicated competitive gaming space within the Alumni Room, set to open in Spring 2025. This initiative aligns with the school's long-term vision for esports and education, reinforcing its dedication to preparing students for the future.

While the Larry Gariglio Theatre will ultimately serve as the venue for esports competitions for audiences when it re-opens in Fall 2026 as a cafetorium space, the Alumni Room is currently undergoing renovations to become a state-of-the-art esports training and competition facility. The space will be ready for student use as soon as the conclusion of Spring Break 2025, allowing for the early development of the school's esports program.

"Esports is more than just competitive gaming—it's about fostering teamwork, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills," said Superintendent Don Killingbeck. "This initiative is part of our long-term plan to ensure our students have access to cutting-edge opportunities that will prepare them for careers in a rapidly evolving world."

A key factor in making this vision a reality has been the leadership of Hemlock's Director of Business Operations, Denise Dowdell, who identified and secured grant funding to support the expansion of parts of the esports program. "By leveraging available grant opportunities, we’ve been able to accelerate this initiative and create a space where students can thrive competitively and academically," said Director Dowdell. "Esports is a growing field, and we are committed to ensuring our students have a place to develop their skills and compete at a high level."

"This new esports space represents an investment in our students and their futures," said Matt Wesener, President of the Board of Education. "We believe this program will not only bring students together but also open doors to scholarships, careers, and real-world skill development."

With construction underway on the Alumni Room esports facility, Hemlock High School is actively seeking a passionate and experienced coach to lead the program. The school is also recruiting students who are interested in being a part of this exciting new chapter. Tryouts and informational meetings will be announced in the coming months.

Esports continues to gain momentum in education, offering students opportunities in STEM, broadcasting, game development, and more. Hemlock Public School District is proud to be at the forefront of this movement, ensuring students are equipped with skills that will serve them in both collegiate and professional settings.
