Hemlock Public School District is proud to announce that two of its esteemed Young Fives teachers, Ms. Kalena Kenny and Mrs. Karrah Chludil, have been recognized with the prestigious STEM STAR Award by Saginaw Valley State University and the MiSTEM Network – East Central Michigan Region. This remarkable achievement highlights their dedication to fostering a love for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among the district's youngest learners.

The STEM STAR Award is part of the 5th annual recognition program by Saginaw Valley State University and the MiSTEM Network – East Central Michigan Region, celebrating educators who demonstrate excellence in STEM education. As STEM STAR Award winners, Ms. Kenny and Mrs. Chludil will be recognized for their outstanding contributions at the annual STEM Teacher Dinner on February 19th at Saginaw Valley State University. In addition to the accolade, they will each receive a STEM STAR award and a $250 grant, provided by MiSTEM Region 10, to enhance STEM education in their classrooms.

Superintendent Don Killingbeck expressed his congratulations, stating, "Ms. Kenny and Mrs. Chludil's commitment to STEM education is truly inspiring. They are dedicated to laying the foundation for a lifetime of STEM exploration and innovation in our youngest learners. We are incredibly proud to have them on our team."

Both Ms. Kenny and Mrs. Chludil have played a pivotal role in creating engaging and hands-on STEM experiences for their young students. Their enthusiasm for STEM education is contagious, sparking curiosity and a desire to learn more about the world around them. Their dedication to fostering a love for STEM at such an early age is invaluable and sets the stage for future success in these fields.

Board President Matt Wesener congratulated both teachers, stating, "Ms. Kenny and Mrs. Chludil's commitment to inspiring students in STEM subjects is commendable. Their innovative teaching methods and dedication to creating engaging learning experiences align perfectly with our district's values. We are proud to see their efforts recognized with the STEM STAR Award."

In the words of one of their students, "My teachers are the best because we do cool things like pumpkin science and it’s so fun! They both should get all the stars."

Hemlock Elementary principal Cory Snider said, "Mrs. Chludil and Ms. Kenny exemplify the innovative spirit of Hemlock Elementary and Hemlock Public School District, fostering curiosity and creativity in our students daily. Being recognized with the STEM Star Award is a testament to their dedication and passion for inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers and critical thinkers."
