Ribbon

The Hemlock Public School District marked a significant milestone in its journey toward enhanced educational excellence on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, as the Board of Education, joined by over 100 community members, gathered to cut the ribbon and officially open the expanded Lockwood STEM Center. This event heralds a new era of innovation, collaboration, and hands-on learning for students.

The expansion of the Lockwood STEM Center symbolizes the district’s commitment to equipping students with the tools and resources necessary to thrive in an ever-evolving technological landscape. This state-of-the-art facility will empower students through enriched programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), ensuring they are well-prepared for future academic and career pursuits.

The evening featured charcuterie and punch, catered by Hemlock Food Service, and brought together key donors and contributors who made this project possible. Notable attendees included Greg Turner of Pumford Construction, John Geiger of Merrill Technologies Group, Glen Stevens of Mich Auto, Andy Ault of HSC, John Garner of SCE, as well as Jeremy Jacobson and Melissa Young of Case Systems, along with many other supporters and contributors.

“I’m so excited about this new space,” said one junior at Hemlock High School. “It’s going to give us so many more opportunities to learn and collaborate on real-world projects. I can’t wait to start using it!”

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck expressed his gratitude and emphasized the importance of this addition: “This expansion represents the culmination of community vision and dedication. It’s not only a testament to the power of education but also a sign of how we, as a district, are committed to providing our students with the best opportunities to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

Honoring Tom and Dana Lockwood: The ceremony also paid tribute to Tom and Dana Lockwood, whose leadership and advocacy for STEM education have left an indelible mark on the Hemlock community. Tom and Dana, long-time champions of innovation and learning, have been instrumental in raising the bar for educational standards and opportunities within the district. Their passion for empowering students with hands-on, real-world experiences has been a catalyst for change.

Matt Wesener, President of the Hemlock Public School District Board of Education, added: “The Lockwood STEM Center expansion is a major investment in our students’ futures. This facility is more than just a building—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of thinkers, creators, and innovators. We’re grateful to Tom and Dana Lockwood, as well as all of our partners who helped make this possible. Hemlock continues to be a community that supports progress and education.”

Looking Ahead: Following the November 6th ribbon-cutting, Hemlock Public School District will host a public open house in the spring of 2025 (date to be determined), offering the community an opportunity to explore the new facility and see firsthand how it will benefit students.

“Tom and Dana’s legacy of leadership continues to inspire us,” added Superintendent Dr. Killingbeck. “Their support and dedication to the growth of our STEM programs have transformed what was once a dream into the remarkable reality we see today.”

Attendees included district leaders, staff, students, and numerous community partners who have supported the STEM initiative.
